Joy of Reading

Reading is something I really enjoy but a pastime that I tend to dip in and out of. I could go for a year or more and read nothing more than a few Facebook or Instagram posts and then pick up a book and all of a sudden I’m hooked.

When my passion for reading is reignited I will usually read several books one after another and fantasise about opening my own book shop. Lol

I had been working on personal development and spent a bit of time reading articles on the habits of successful people which all listed reading everyday as an important habit.  This process programmed me to think that my reading material needed to be educational or business related.  While I do find these kind of books to be useful I was finding that reading was becoming a chore and not an enjoyable pastime.  I was very quickly losing interest in reading books until I was having a conversation with my best friend who at the time had a temporary job working in the library.  While we were discussing the merits of reading physical books as apposed to digitally, I was explaining my struggles because of the genres I felt I had to stick to, my friend said to me “there are no rules to what you read and the only person making the rules was me”.  This conversation struck a chord with me and I thought to myself that is so true I should read the books that I enjoy reading.  So with this in mind, here are a few of the titles that have gripped me lately:-

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER by Clare Gallagher

A heart warming story about friendship.

The story is about Irish girl Cat who spends a year at a US college and the friendship she develops with her roommate Alex.  The book takes you on a journey with Cat and Alex following adventures they share and how they support each other through the good times and the bad, the laughter and the tears.

I enjoyed this book because it was a fun easy read.  Perfect for a Sunday afternoon curled up on the sofa.

THE SHITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS by Serena Terry

It’s the most wonderful time of the year….

It’s a month before Christmas, Tara is 8 months pregnant and all she wants is to have the perfect family Christmas which would be easy if it wasn’t for everyone else around her.  There’s her moody teenager who tries her patience at every given opportunity, her chauvinistic boss who crosses the line one too many times and then her less than supportive mother who decides to move in with her for the holidays.

This book is a laugh out loud rendition of the reality of family life, love and insecurities all compounded by the holiday season of goodwill.

I’LL TAKE NEWYORK by Miranda Dickson

Bea is an English girl living in New York.  She has just broken up with her long term boyfriend when she meets Jake who has recently moved back to New York from San Francisco after his marriage ended.

Together they make a pact to never allow themselves to fall in love again! No more relationships, no more heartbreak and no more pain.  A great friendship develops as they explore together the hidden gems of the city they both love as 2 new singletons.

Will their pact for no more relationships be strong enough when romance comes knocking at the door or will love win in the end.

Dinner @ Ginger

I had a pleasantly unexpected invite to go to Ginger Bistro on Great Victoria Street in Belfast for dinner yesterday evening.  Our reservation was for 6pm and while we were able to find parking a few streets away this restaurant is close to the city center and therefore accessible via Public Transport.

We arrived before 6pm and were shown straight to our table in the back room of the restaurant which had a more cosy feel than the modern bistro style of the front restaurant.  The servers were very attentive and immediately took our coats, poured us water and took our drinks order.

We ordered starters to share, The Squid and Dips was delightful and the Fried Salt and Cumin Chicken starter was full of flavour and just enough to tantalise our tastebuds.

We both had the Chicken Schnitzel with tomato and butter bean casserole which was delicious, dessert was Creme Brûlée with a raspberry compote and sticky toffee pudding with toffe sauce.

All in all it was a lovely meal and very reasonably priced at £66.00 for 2 Three course dinners, a beer and a glass of wine.

Well worth a visit.
